    U.S. House Passes Legislation to Reauthorize the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative

    This week, the U.S. Home of Representatives handed The American Water Stewardship Act (H.R. 6422), laws that reauthorizes important regional watershed initiatives by 2031, together with the Nice Lakes Restoration Initiative. With out reauthorization, the Nice Lakes Restoration Initiative is ready to run out on the finish of September 2026.  

    Assertion from Marnie Urso, Senior Coverage Director for Audubon’s Nice Lakes Workplace:  

    “When birds have the habitat they want, they thrive. Since its creation, the Nice Lakes Restoration Initiative has invested billions of {dollars} in efforts throughout the area, supporting greater than 8,000 tasks which have improved water high quality, restored wetlands, strengthened coastal resilience and guarded chook and wildlife habitat.”  

    “Over the previous three a long time, breeding marsh chook populations within the Nice Lakes have declined considerably, however habitat restoration helps to carry them again. Because of the Nice Lakes Restoration Initiative, Audubon and its companions have helped to revive and preserve greater than 10,000 acres of wetland habitat—supporting susceptible marsh birds, clear consuming water, and flood safety for communities throughout the area.”  

    “The Nice Lakes area continues to face vital threats. Sturdy funding for the Nice Lakes Restoration Initiative is important to sustaining and constructing upon the progress we’ve made to guard chook habitat and enhance the standard of lives for individuals and communities throughout the Nice Lakes area.” 

    “We applaud the U.S. Home for this motion and urge the Senate to take comparable motion to reauthorize the Nice Lakes Restoration Initiative and be certain that it continues to profit the 40 million individuals that rely on the Nice Lakes for consuming water and the hundreds of thousands of birds that depend on the Nice Lakes.”
