Funding for Regional Water Quality Projects will Help Farmers, Wildlife, and the Northern Everglades

The Workplace of Agriculture Water Coverage has allotted $25 million for regional water high quality enchancment initiatives. Supported by Commissioner Wilton Simpson, the Agricultural Regional Tasks Program addresses nonpoint air pollution in areas with heavy agricultural use. This funding permits candidates to use for initiatives that promote nutrient administration in chosen Basin Administration Motion Plan areas, together with the Lake Okeechobee watershed.

5 million of the $25 million is required to be spent within the Lake Okeechobee watershed. This permits landowners and companies to offer nutrient discount initiatives, thus bettering the water high quality and amount downstream. As a result of phosphorus and nitrogen transfer off the panorama by means of stormwater flows to Lake Okeechobee, nutrient ranges there are magnified. These excessive nutrient ranges trigger dangerous algal blooms, which might then trigger each lack of submerged aquatic vegetation and fish kills.

Audubon commends the Workplace of Agriculture Water Coverage for this dedication to advancing the restoration of the Everglades headwaters. We’re working with landowners to assist their purposes and discover extra appropriate land within the Okeechobee basin by means of our Wetland Evaluation Tool.
