This summer time, the Iain Nicolson Audubon Middle at Rowe Sanctuary welcomed younger explorers again to the colourful ecosystems of the Platte River Valley. With most of our training employees taking part in Safari and SOAR Camps for the primary time, we deliberately targeted on making a smaller, extra hands-on camp expertise. Campers attended half-day classes, permitting us to check how the brand new Anne Hubbard Training Classroom would improve programming. Although camp was scaled down in comparison with previous years, the extra targeted construction gave us a beneficial alternative to be taught and develop.

Over three weeks, twenty-six campers in second via fifth grade joined us to discover wetlands, prairies, and the Platte River itself. Every day featured participating, sensory-rich experiences designed to foster curiosity and deepen understanding of the pure world.

Day 1: Birds of the Platte River Valley
We started by introducing campers to the area’s feathered residents and the ecosystems they depend on. Campers discovered why birds migrate via Nebraska, methods to use binoculars, and what traits outline a hen. The day was stuffed with interactive actions, together with dressing up fellow campers as birds and adorning private nature journals, which they used each day for observations and reflections.

    Day 2: Wetland Wonders
Campers explored the Sanctuary’s new Wetland Exploration Deck and discovered concerning the position wetlands play as important habitat for migratory birds and different wildlife. Dip-netting adventures revealed macroinvertebrates like caddisfly and dragonfly larvae, providing hands-on classes in biodiversity. One camper’s shoe was misplaced to the muddy depths, however in return, we gained new data and unforgettable discoveries.

Day 3: Secrets and techniques of the Prairie
On prairie day, campers investigated how birds use grasslands, and methods to inform grasses from forbs. Scientists are solely pretty much as good because the instruments they use, so campers discovered methods to make the most of numerous instruments to discover the prairie. With jeweler’s loupes, they intently examined prairie vegetation, whereas sweep nets helped uncover hidden bugs. Campers made wildlife observe casts with plaster and created gorgeous cyanotype prints utilizing native vegetation — mixing science and artwork via prairie-inspired creativity.

    Day 4: River Connections
The ultimate day took us to the Platte River. Campers in contrast river species to these present in wetlands, utilizing dip nets and seine nets to catch crawdads and small fish. They experimented with constructing dams to know how human-made buildings have an effect on river circulate and habitat. With snorkels and masks, campers noticed underwater life, ending the day with joyful river play and newfound appreciation for this important ecosystem.

Extra Than a Camp — A Connection to Nature

The mission of Rowe’s Safari Nature Camps is to immerse kids within the wonders of the pure world — sparking curiosity, constructing data, and fostering a lifelong connection to nature. At Rowe Sanctuary, studying comes alive beneath open skies. These summer time packages do greater than train. They invite campers to grow to be a part of nature’s story, nurturing the subsequent technology of environmental stewards, scientists, and storytellers. We sit up for increasing subsequent yr’s camp and increase the camp program.
