The Colorado River and its tributaries—which help 40 million individuals, sacred Tribal lands, a $1.4 trillion financial system, greater than 5 million acres of farms and ranches, and 1000’s of species of wildlife—are shrinking as a result of local weather change and overuse.
Vital habitats exist and have been deliberately reestablished alongside greater than 400 miles of the Colorado River because it flows south of Hoover Dam. To boost consciousness of those gems within the desert that help 400 species of birds, Audubon Southwest launched a visually-appealing StoryMap web site created by Elija Flores and myself referred to as Lower Colorado River Habitats: Exploring important habitats of the Lower Colorado River and what they mean for birds and people.
Along with lovely imagery, the StoryMap options:
-
An interactive map to orient viewers to the Decrease Colorado River because it flows from Hoover Dam into Mexico, that includes water infrastructure, Tribal lands, and extra.
-
A gallery of focused restoration habitat varieties and birds that decision them dwelling.
-
A tour down the river that includes particular habitat websites.
-
An summary of the Colorado River Publish-2026 Operations course of and Audubon’s engagement.
As we proceed to handle the confused Colorado River, it is important that we elevate and shield these particular locations—for birds and folks.
