It’s with a heavy coronary heart that we share the unhappy information that Dr. Sandy DeSimone, our Director of Analysis, Schooling, and Land Administration at Starr Ranch Sanctuary, lately handed away. Our deepest sympathies go to her husband and Starr Ranch Supervisor, Pete DeSimone, throughout this troublesome time.
Sandy’s 30 years of dedication to the sanctuary and fervour for conservation has left an unbelievable legacy of influence. After conducting her thesis and dissertation analysis on coastal sage scrub at Starr Ranch, our 4,000-acre Audubon Sanctuary in southeast Orange County, she took on the function of Director in 1997. Since then, she has been the center of the sanctuary, constructing widespread education schemes, partnering with biologists and universities to conduct long-term fowl and wildlife analysis, and introducing new methods of fascinated with ecological restoration and wildlife habitat.
Sandy was recognized statewide for her modern experiments to check nonchemical strategies for controlling invasive weeds and she or he has restored massive swaths of grasslands and globally endangered coastal scrublands. Her land administration ethos has been replicated on over 100,000 acres of habitat in Orange County and past. Area Ecology Applications, created and led by Sandy, introduced in 1000’s of individuals of all ages – from PhD college students receiving mentorship to elementary-aged kids studying in regards to the canyon’s owls, to expertise the mosaic of imperiled habitats of the location.
Andrea Jones, Vice President of California, shared:
“I had the privilege of working with Sandy for nearly 20 years – her love of Starr Ranch ran deep and influenced everybody round her. However Sandy’s best influence was on the a whole lot of scholars and early profession biologists that she mentored yearly by means of her internship and discipline ecology packages. Sandy would typically share with me letters and emails from previous employees, many happening to get PhDs and work in conservation, whereas staying in contact and expressing deep appreciation for all she taught them. Her influence on so many early profession biologists was immeasurable.”
Sandy was actually a conservation hero. All of us at Audubon California really feel honored to have recognized her and to have witnessed her work, humor, and intelligence. She will likely be significantly missed.
